Regarded by many as one of the great new talents of UK techno, and certainly demonstrating a healthy degree of originality, Lief Ryan is a welcome addition to the Iron Oxide roster. Although he undoubtedly has one foot in the camp of wonk, there is also a refreshing directness that makes this 4-tracker a killer choice for tougher clubs. Influences drawn from breaks and grime production give the bottom end a satisfying weight and throb, while elements of the programming certainly owe a debt to ?classic? techno and wonky producers such as Neil Landstrumm. Maybe it is his location in Manchester that gives his productions the edge that they have, certainly they sound a lot more street-wise and less self-conscious than many of his more Southern contemporaries. Whatever, this is a strong four track ep that is sure to gain him more attention in an increasingly jaded techno scene.
Basic Channel heads Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald keep the burial mix series going with its most ambitious release to date - a collection of seven 7" singles featuring vocal contributions from Basic Channel collaborators old and new. "See Mi Yah" is a classic collection of one rhythm tracks, typical format and production approach in Reggae, featuring ten vocal versions and one instrumental of the See Mi Yah rhythm (an additional 3 are only available on the 7" collection)
